Kansas City Royals: Very tough MLB squad to sweep at home
One has to go back to the last three days in August 2014 to find the last time the Royals suffered a sweep in the Show Me State. Another AL Central foe (Cleveland) did the damage Chicago is hoping to inflict today. Don’t cry for Kansas City though as they still hold a five game lead over Toronto in the American League race. The Royals (82-53) lead in the AL Central is more than double as the Minnesota Twins are 12 games back. Kansas City’s only series sweep this season was in New York as the Yankees ripped the Royals by a 23-4 margin. KC is a solid 9-5 over their last 14 games.
Chicago White Sox: Glimmers of hope have not been enough for the South Siders
Heralded as possible American League contenders during the MLB preseason, Chicago (64-70) is basically playing out the string at this point. The White Sox sit 17.5 games out in the AL Central race. An AL Wild Card spot may appear possible, being just seven games back, but the South Siders trail seven teams in that chase. Put a fork in ‘em. Chicago teased their fans with a seven game winning streak but they have posted a 15-20 mark since that run ended on July 29. While they have produced better recently, with 42 runs plated in their last nine games, the White Sox 523 runs scored is the fourth worst mark in the Majors. The Sox are dipping into their farm system today.
Kansas City vs Chicago MLB Call: Royals RHP Johnny Cueto (9-10 ERA 3.04) faces White Sox RHP Erik Johnson in the mound matchup here. Cueto has struggled some recently as he’s given up 14 runs in just 16 innings pitched over his last three starts – all KC loses. Johnson is making his first start of the season in the big leagues after a solid run (11-8 ERA 2.37) down on the farm in Triple-A Charlotte.
