Eskimos Odds To Win The Grey Cup
The Edmonton Eskimos somewhat lucked out in 2016, as the Eastern Division netted only two playoff teams, allowing the fourth place Eskimos to play in a crossover playoff game. That was the third time in nine years the Eskimos crossed over from the Western Division to play Eastern teams. The crossover years have not been kind on Edmonton, as they failed to make the Grey Cup each time. Recently hired general manager Brock Sunderland – who spent the last three seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks – has stayed relatively quiet this offseason, adding only a few pieces. The team still has most of the parts from their 2015 Grey Cup championship team. This made Sunderland focus on adding depth and working around the talent, he already has.
Expectations are high in Edmonton. Quarterback Mike Reilly is coming off his best season as a pro, and at 32 years old, he is right in the middle of his prime. With Reilly at the helm, Edmonton boasts one of the best rosters in the Canadian Football League. The team finished second in points scored in 2016 and added another offensive weapon in running back Travon Van. Head coach Jason Maas – who now has a year of head coaching experience under his belt – will work to improvement the team’s defense, which had its share of flaws in 2016, but was still good enough to finish fifth in points allowed. As Edmonton has a top-tier offense and potentially better than average defense, the team and their fans expect a Grey Cup in 2017.
With +550 odds, the Edmonton Eskimos are right up there with the BC Lions as the biggest challenger to the Calgary Stampeders in 2017. The Eskimos have a great team, led by a MOP calibre quarterback and an emerging head coach. The most major drawback facing the Eskimos is how the strength of the Western Division. Edmonton only managed to go 5-5 against the West in 2016, which hurt their playoff seeding. They did, however, go 8-2 against the West in 2015 and 6-4 in 2014. A one or two win improvement in 2017 would likely give Edmonton a higher playoff seed and make them a legitimate Grey Cup favourite.

Edmonton heads out to Vancouver to start their 2017 season – playing the BC Lions on June 24 at 10:00 PM EST. The Lions and Eskimos split their meetings in 2016, with the home team winning by an average of 6.5 points. The odds have the Lions and Eskimos as the second and third favourite to win the Grey Cup making this arguably the best game of the CFL's opening weekend.

Edmonton follows up the opening weekend with three games against Eastern Division opponents. They host the Montreal Alouettes and the Ottawa Redblacks – with their first bye week sandwiched in between – before heading east to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Edmonton beat Hamilton in the playoffs last season - in Hamilton – 24-21 before getting beat down by Ottawa in the Eastern Division Finals 35-23. It is not until week 9 of the CFL season that Edmonton plays a Western Division team besides BC.
From week 9 to week 12 Edmonton plays four consecutive games against the West – including a home-and-home against the Calgary Stampeders in early September. The largest remaining games of Edmonton’s season are a week 18 against BC and week 19 against Calgary. These two games could determine where Edmonton finishes in the standings.
