CFL Football Thursday Games
CFL week 1 begins with four games in four days beginning Thursday. The Saskatchewan Roughriders visit the Montreal Alouettes where former signal caller Darian Durant faces the team he won two Grey Cup rings with. Friday features a rematch between the Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks in Ottawa, home to this year's Grey Cup. On Saturday, a critical showdown pits the Edmonton Eskimos against the BC Lions in Vancouver. And wrapping up the week is the Battle of the QEW as the Toronto Argonauts host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
CFL Online Betting Picks Today
With the exception of the Roughriders-Alouettes game, this week's matchups are relatively close. Bettors should avoid the first game due to the countless question marks surrounding both teams, who aren't even that good, to begin with. The best pick is the Hamilton Tiger-Cats -3.5 (-110) on the point spread or -175 on the money line. The Argonauts are in rebuilding mode and the Ticats are almost in full health with starting quarterback Zach Collaros set to reignite the team's Grey Cup hopes. Hamilton is underrated in this spot and is a must-bet.
- Saskatchewan Roughriders at Montreal Alouettes (Thu, June 22 - 7:30 PM ET)
The Riders signified a new era by trading Durant to the Als and adding journeyman Kevin Glenn for his third stint. If preseason and training camp is any indication though, this is another long season for them. The Als are not much better and are hoping Durant will reinvigorate a hapless offense but the 11-year vet has already had two career-threatening injuries and could be a ghost of his old self. This game is hot garbage and betting is inadvisable but if you insist, take a shot on the Roughriders.
Prediction: Saskatchewan Roughriders (+245) at Sports Interaction
- Calgary Stampeders at Ottawa Redblacks (Fri, June 23 - 7:30 PM ET)
The Stamps were far-and-away the best team in the CFL last season but it was Ottawa who played better in the Grey Cup. John Hufnagel's squad will be more motivated and are fast starters while the Redblacks face a Grey Cup hangover and several key departures on the team including quarterback Henry Burris. Trevor Harris is more than a capable starter and is arguably an improvement over Burris but he's still relatively unproven. Bo Levi Mitchell is still the league's best QB and the Stamps should roll.
Prediction: Calgary Stampeders (-155) at Sports Interaction
- Edmonton Eskimos at BC Lions (Sat, June 24 - 10:00 PM ET)
If the Stampeders didn't exist, the Lions would be the CFL's best team. Led explosive talents in offense like quarterback Jonathon Jennings and wideouts Emmanuel Arceneaux and Bryan Burham, the Lions will light up the scoreboard. Jennings still has to prove he's legit against a struggling Eskimos defense. Edmonton must find a way to revive their 2015 form in which they led the league in total defense while aging quarterback Mike Reilly has to deal with the loss of elite wideout Derel Walker. The Lions should win a high-scoring affair here.
Prediction: BC Lions (-165) at Sports Interaction
- Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonauts (Sun, June 25 - 4:00 PM ET)
The Tiger-Cats don't get the same amount of hoopla as the Argos but have been superior team since their return to prominence in 2013. The Ticats have been better than their records have indicated and were derailed by injuries last season but a healthy Zach Collaros should mean they stomp on a young and inexperienced Argos team. The double blue have plenty of young talent and ol' faithful Ricky Ray as signal caller so they are a live dog here but this is Hamilton's game to lose.
Prediction: Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-175) at Sports Interaction
The CFL may not have the glitz and glamour of the NFL but its still a fulfilling league. The league is great for those looking for pass-happy offenses and high-scoring. But more importantly, there are unbelievable comebacks and underdog stories as the Redblacks showed last season. Check your sportsbooks for the latest CFL odds and for promotions such as a signup bonus of up to $200. Now's the time to get acquainted with Canadian football as a good compliment to the NFL.
