Over the last 20 years the 1st overall pick in the NHL draft has brought names such as Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and Steven Stamkos into our lives.
Even if they don't evolve into a superstar, the number one selection usually goes on to have a respectable career. The second overall pick though still has produced plenty of great to above average NHL careers but none like those of the above mentioned names.
NHL Draft Odds are available on a few popular sites, but not all of them. As we approach the day, more sites may put up lines.
And with the First Overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft the New Jersey Devils are on the clock and look to have a choice between 18 year old American Centre Jack Hughes and 18 year Finnish winger Kaapo Kakko.
But is this really that much of a sweat? The 2019 NHL Draft Lottery Odds suggest not...
2019 NHL Draft:
Hughes heavily favored to go 1st overall.
Some online betting sites have Hughes as high as -800 to be the first overall pick and here's why:
- He is an American born player, with the 1st overall pick being an American team
- He is the best prospect and can play NHL hockey right away
- He will sell jerseys and tickets in New Jersey, a market that could use the injection
It's much more acceptable for the New Jersey Devils to take no chances and Draft Jack Hughes #1 overall. If you measure risk vs. reward it plays out as such:
IF, worst case scenario, Jack Hughes turned out to be a flop, no one could blame the Devils front office for making the obvious choice.
However, If the Devils drafted Kakko first overall then they would be handing over an a marketable, American born player with huge star potential to their rivals the New York Rangers. That would be the type of decision that gets lots of people fired!
Furthermore, Kaapo Kakko is a type 1 diabetic and also suffers from celiac disease which by no means is an indication that he can not become an elite NHL player, but still a marker that only makes Jack Hughes look like the clear selection.
Only in rare circumstances would we recommend laying this much juice on any play so a word to the wise. Stay within your betting limits. If your average wager would be around $100, then bet $100 as your risk on this play to win $25. NHL draft lottery odds are not important enough to risk a significant chunk of your bankroll.
Who goes 3rd Overall?
We're going to stick with the local theme here and predict that the Chicago Blackhawks take 18 year old Centre Alex Turcotte with the 3rd overall pick.
Being an Illinois native makes this another feel good pick. Not to mention that Turcotte is the prototypical 2-way forward that can carve out a long sustained NHL career. He will not be NHL ready right way however. He will be playing University hockey next season.
