Martin was born in East York, Ontario, which is now part of the greater Toronto area, and grew up in the Montreal area. He arrived in big leagues via little known Chipola College in Marianna, Florida.
Drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers (17th round 2002 MLB Draft) Martin became an everyday starter for the National League club at the beginning of the 2006 MLB season. While Martin enjoyed a ton of success, both defensively and offensively, in his first three seasons with the Dodgers, he slumped the next two years and Los Angeles didn’t renew his contract prior to the 2011 campaign. New York Yankees Waiting On Martin Contract Negotiations
Always known for having a fat wallet, the New York Yankees swooped in and signed Martin to a one-year contract for the 2011 season. Over the off-season, during negotiations is the winter months, New York agreed to pay the Canadian catcher $7.5 million for the 2012 MLB season.
This is a big year for Martin, who turned 29 in February, as he is hoping for a four-year contract extension in the Big Apple. As reported by ESPN NewYork.com the two sides have "mutually agreed to wait" until the end of the 2012 MLB season before reopening the contract extension talks.
