Tanner Roark Facing Erik Johnson Gives Washington a Pitching Advantage Tonight
As part of the Nationals third ranked pitching staff, RHP Tanner Roark (5-4 ERA 2.93) opens this four-game weekend series for Washington. Except for three lackluster outings, Roark has been solid as he has allowed three runs or less in ten of his thirteen starts – including five outings where he did not allow a single run. Roark’s last start was a beauty as he shutout the Phillies and allowed just six hits over seven innings during an 8-0 Nationals’ win on June 11. Expect another strong start here.
San Diego counters with RHP Erik Johnson (0-3 ERA 7.71) who is making his fourth start of the season tonight – his second in a Padres uniform. Johnson was acquired from Chicago after San Diego traded James Shields to the White Sox. While in the Windy City, Johnson gave up nine runs over 11.2 innings pitched during two losses.
