DC United Record
Without question D.C United is the most successful Eastern Conference Club and the second most successful club in league history. With four MLS Cup victories in five appearances D.C United owns four of the six Cups an Eastern Conference team has won. The majority of their success came in the early years of the league, with the team going to the first four MLS Cups – winning three. Their other victory came in 2004.
The team has seen its success dwindle in the decade after their last Cup victory. They have managed to three times finish atop the East and in 2006 and 2007 they were the top team in the league. Since 2004 though they have twice won the Wooden Spoon – an award given to the worst team in the league – and have yet to return to the finals, even though they were the top team in the East three times.
Currently the United play at RFK Stadium – one of the biggest stadiums in the league with a capacity of over 45,000. The team is expected to move as early as 2018 to a new, smaller stadium – with a capacity of around 25,000. The move will help create a louder, more soccer like environment and the stadium size is more in line with most other MLS clubs.
The biggest rival of D.C United is the New York Red Bulls. As two of the founding members of Major League Soccer and the Eastern Conference, the rivalry has been played for over 20 years with DC winning the Atlantic Cup – their annual rivalry trophy – 13 times. The teams have also met 12 times in the playoffs where DC has 7 victories and the game has ended in a draw twice. D.C United has a growing rivalry with Philadelphia – a club that joined the MLS in 2010.
