An NHL hockey franchise was awarded to the city of San Jose in 1991, with their first seasons played in the Cow Palace – a venue rejected by the NHL back in the 1970s. Similar to most expansion teams, it took a while to get themselves organized, requiring just over a decade to forge their current identity. Over the past decade or so, San Jose Sharks lines show them as one of the top teams in the league on a regular basis.

San Jose Sharks Record
While the Sharks did have some entertaining moments and huge upsets early on in the team’s history, the reputation of the team as a perennial contender started when the Sharks fleeced the Boston Bruins by acquiring Joe Thornton for Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart during the 2005-2006 season. Incredibly, Thornton won the Hart and the Art Ross that same year, creating an unprecedented situation where a team literally traded away their MVP.
The addition of Jumbo Joe allowed the Sharks to win division championships between 2008-2011, as well as a Presidents Trophy in 2008-09. Despite the fact that they were considered among the top contender to take it all during those years, the team never managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. In fact, they became one of the very few teams to lose a playoff series after going up three games to none. As a result, the team has a reputation for folding in the playoffs at a moment’s notice, perhaps undeservedly.
While the team has been much maligned due to the lack of deep playoff runs following fantastic regular seasons, the truth is that the main strength of the Sharks tends to be the depth that they possess at every position. Typically, the team is able to put together a pair of top-notch scoring lines every game, in addition to defensive pairings which lack an obvious weakness. Similar to the Flyers, the team typically hasn’t been able to secure the type of goaltending that impresses onlookers.
Considering the fact that the Sharks have a deep lineup that includes several top-flight skaters and experienced all-stars, there’s no reason to believe that San Jose cannot transcend their history of fading in the playoffs, finally delivering on the promise that their talented squad displays on a yearly basis.
