For every “Air Jordan” and “Magic Johnson”, there are a dozen boring, forgettable and sometimes downright awful nicknames. How these names came to be is sometimes a mysterious, but the worst ones have a lasting effect and stay with players throughout their entire career. Bad NBA Nicknames
Superstars, Egos And Betting On The NBA
Nicknames come in two ways. Either fans or teammates due to some aspect of their play or personality give them or they are self-given and reflective of a player’s ego. Basketball is an ego-driven sport and when betting on the NBA, it is important to consider the role ego plays in games. The biggest egos typically belong to some of the biggest stars and best players in the league.
Teams filled with talented players with big egos are known to have issues with players clashing. The Houston Rockets last season, with Dwight Howard and James Harden, had that problem. One year removed from a Western Conference Finals trip, the team faltered and evidently failed. Dwight has since left and Harden is one of the favourites to win MVP in 2017.
Putting egos aside helped the Cleveland Cavaliers win the NBA Finals in 2016. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love were both top dogs before teaming up with LeBron James. Even though their first season together was a success, there was obvious tension when certain players did not see the ball enough. In their second season, they managed to put their egos aside and let their talent do the talking. Now in their third season together, the Cavs are rolling out the gate and have the potential to have one of the historically great seasons in NBA history.
