The 2019 Season

The new Major League Soccer seasons commences on March 2nd, 2019 and will run until the first weekend in October. Key dates for the MLS Schedule are:

• A 1 week break for the CONCACAF Gold Cup from June 14-21
• 2019 All Star game on July 31, from Orlando, Florida
• Rivalry week from August 21-25

Now as far as online betting is concerned, I'd start to pay real close attention to rosters and squad rotation around late May, early June when rosters for the Gold Cup are announced. Domestic League and International soccer competitions are always tricky to navigate for coaches and players.

International coaches want their players rested while domestic managers considering looming International tournaments a nuisance to have to factor into their squad selection. Constantly we see these two entities butting heads as everyone is looking out for their best interests. When you're fighting for your place in the MLS Standings, the last thing you want to ponder as a coach is "should I risk my best players, with a major international tournament on the horizon?"

And once the Gold Cup is over, you'll need to monitor which players logged major minutes and may be given a rest as well as anyone who may have picked up injury.

For those players not involved in the Gold Cup it will be ultimately beneficial to get a week's holiday to rest and recharge. Rosters with more players in this category may see an uptick the first few matchdays back.

 

MLS Future Bets 2019

The last 6 MLS seasons have seen 6 different teams take home the crown. In other words, parity is at all time high. That being said, defending champions Atlanta United feel like the kind of program that's designed to be a really good soccer team, for a really long time.

The only hesitation with backing Atlanta United to win the whole thing again (+550 on William Hill) is a change in coaches from former Argentina National manager, Gerardo "Tata" Martino to with former Ajax and Netherland International Legend Frank de Boer, whose roots in the Barca-Ajax school of football, suggests that he should take to the current Atlanta United philosophy like a fish to water.

However, anytime a team wins a championship and immediately changes coaches, you must take some pause.

The betting favorite to win the MLS Title are the New York Red Bulls (+450) with the LA Galaxy (+600), NYCFC (+800) and Los Angles FC (+900) all rounding out the top 5 which resembles the hip hop game in the 1990s. New York and LA have the highest profile squads and rivalries around but it might actually be Atlanta that's providing the most substance. 

There's little value in the top 5. For me the value lies with Western Conference teams like the Seattle Sounders (+1000) or Portland Timbers (+1200) who will be in the discussion while the Los Angeles team may just be slightly overrated by oddsmakers and the betting public.

 

What are the chances of the Canadian teams?

The 2017 season was one where Canada reigned supreme. Though the Montreal Impact did not make the playoffs, the Vancouver Whitecaps finished 3rd in the Western Conference and made it to the conference semifinals - however, I buried the lead.

The best team in all of Major League Soccer in 2017 was Toronto FC who finished first overall in the regular season and rode their dominance to the MLS Cup. It was the culmination of a splendid football program.

Fast forward 1 year and not a single Canadian team made the MLS playoffs in 2018. Furthermore, for the once mighty Toronto FC, their best player Sebastian Giovinco is now playing in Saudi Arabia and they look to be in a transitional period, which was why I stated, at the top of the article, just how drastically the MLS landscape has shifted in just a short period of time.

With Toronto being +1400 and Montreal and Vancouver at +5000 and +8000 to win the MLS Cup, it looks like the best any Canadian team can hope is to just make the dance. It will be a long season for the die hard Canadian fans who passionately support their clubs.
