Cy Young candidate Kazmir looks to mystify the Mets
Not many pitchers have been better on the bump this season than Athletics crafty veteran Scott Kazmir who enters tonight's contests with a 9-2 record. Kazmir is riding a personal three game winning streak as he has allowed just four runs on 17 hits with 27 strikeouts over 26.1 innings pitched in June. No team has plated more runs than Oakland as they average 5.1 runs per game and their 47-29 record has them five games up on the LA Angeles in the AL West. The A's sparkling 3.02 team ERA is the second best mark in the majors.
Bartolo Colon seeks a measure of revenge versus his former team
Bartolo Colon, now in his 17th MLB season, faces his former teammates for the first time tonight. After posting a 28-15 record over two season in Oakland, the Athletics released Colon (7-5 ERA 3.88) into free agency and signed Kazmir to replace him. Colon has been rock solid recently as he is 5-0 with a 1.66 ERA (six earned runs over 35.1 innings pitched) in his last six starts. The Mets (35-41) trail Washington by 5.5 games in the rather weak NL East Division but they are fresh off an 11-5 mashing of the Marlins in Miami on Sunday.
