Breeders Cup Odds: The Favourites
Even though this is a wide-open horse race, there stand some of the more renowned contenders per Breeders Cup odds. These don't necessarily indicate the quality of the horse or the jockey but rather their popularity:
Mckinzie (4.33)
The very slight favourite, Mckinzie got to this position because this colt is the most accomplished of the bunch. But despite some nifty wins under its belt, it has also made a habit of finishing second as the odds-on favourite (three times this year). Add a jockey change and Mckinzie's odds may not be as attractive.
Code of Honor (5.00)
He is already being groomed as the best three-year-old and is a contender for the 2019 Eclipse Award. Finishing in the top-two in this race should push his hype further. He has never looked bad throughout the series although this track isn't suited to his fast-paced style.
Vino Rosso (5.50)
The leading win candidate, Vino Rosso has made some improvements from his prior go as a three-year-old. Vino Rosso has evolved to become one of the top dirt distance runners and gets off to a quick start. But it didn't come at the expense of endurance making this stalker a solid contender.
Elate (7.00)
A dark horse among the top-five contenders, Elate doesn't have the same prestige as the three ahead of her but has some prolific achievements nonetheless. Not present at the Breeders Cup last year, Elate is a dynamo when it comes to the mile and a quarter and could make history as just the second female to win the race.
Yoshida (7.00)
If there is a loveable loser moniker, it belongs to Yoshida. Despite going home empty-handed in his past six starts, Yoshida excelled on turf but has picked up steam on dirt. As a one-dimensional closer, Yoshida is pretty steady and predictable and could win if everything lines up for him. But that's a big "if".
Breeders Cup Current Odds: The Dark Horses
Per the Breeders Cup current odds, these next set of horses are considered dark horses or longshots. Take note that this is the Breeders Cup and even the biggest underdog has a legitimate shot at winning. Just look at what Arcangues proved (even though this was over 25 years ago).
Higher Power (15.00)
The favourite among dark horses (if there is ever such a thing) shortened his odds by emerging from the TVG Pacific Classic. This could have been a one-off or a sign of a trend although it's worth noting he's had mixed results since. Although as far as "Hail Mary" bets go, Higher Power even has the name for it.
Owendale (15.00)
Along with Higher Power, Owendale could be the emergent dark horse contender. He's aced the competition among three-year-olds and him being unproven against the upper-tier competition is why he's at such long odds. His issues with his endurance are also a concern although he has since rebounded following these disappointments.
Mongolian Groom (19.00)
A workhorse, Mongolian Groom earned a fees-paid berth to the Classic and his owners had to pay a late $200,000. But it's a sign that they believe Mongolian Groom is at least good enough to place and earn money. But winning the whole thing? Unlikely. But never say never.
Math Wizard, Seeking The Soul, War of Will (26.00)
The three biggest longshots, Math Wizard is a late bloomer with an underdog narrative behind him although he has struggled with consistency. Seeking The Soul is the leading money-earner in the field but has struggled mightily as of late. War of Will has shown flashes but has been mostly an underperformer.
