Canadiens at Capitals NHL Week 2
You gotta love when NHL schedule makers don’t screw around and put heavyweight matchups early on the schedule to make sure we’re hooked early. Listen, we were gonna watch this game anyways. I didn’t spring for the Rogers NHL package for nothing! But thank you for this Saturday Night game. CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada has two rock solid games in the Rangers at the Leafs and the Oilers at the Canucks. But this is the game I’ll be watching.
Prediction: Washington Capitals at Sports Interaction
Someone in the NHL front office hates the Habs.
Ok, well, probably more than one person. But the Canadiens start the season with 6 straight games against likely-playoff-bound teams and their first three games are on the road. They started with a much-needed win against the much-improved Sabres team to open things up. Tonight, they’re in Washington against a tough as hell Caps squad, and tomorrow night they’re off to Chicago to play a Hawks team who scored 10 goals to open the season against the defending champs. Going 2-1 to open the season will be a massive win. I say they’re 1-1 after tonight.
The Canadians only gave up 2 goals in the season opener, on the road nonetheless. They were able to keep the emotional and hyped season-premier crowd in check, and skated away with a great win to start the season. Like I said in the last preview: The more experienced team is where you want to place your bets to start the NHL season. Young guns and new faces in new places can cause confusion early in the year, and it takes them a while to find their groove.
Meanwhile, The Capitals have some optimism going into a fresh season and a clean slate. Their only knock seems to be they can’t beat the Penguins. Back-to-back seasons with strong regular seasons, and winning the Metropolitan division, before getting road blocked in the second round both years by the eventual-Stanley-Cup-Champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Which sucks.
Washington's thrilling 5-4 shootout win on the road in Ottawa was as quality of a win as you’re going to get to start the season. I think they’re very strong and can really run away with the Metro division this season. But, it still does contain those damned Penguins, who care less about regular season accomplishments. The Pens are the Golden State Warriors or New England Patriots of the NHL. Their biggest battle is the bullseye on their backs and complacency during the regular season grind-fest. The Caps have way more to prove and more to play for, so they need to establish home ice over the Penguins during the regular season.
Because they WILL meet in the playoffs for the third season in a row. This much I can promise you. And the Caps will need every advantage they can get to dethrone the Pens.
Meanwhile, the Habs also exited the playoffs early last year, by all accounts. Many experts aren’t sold on them and are picking lukewarm results for the Canadiens this season. Me? I have more faith. They have the best goalie and the biggest X-factor in all of hockey in Carey Price. Nobody else does. I’ve got them losing tonight, but going deep this year.
