Canadiens at Kings NHL Week 7
Let's call a spade a spade. It sucks to be a Montréal Canadiens fan right now. I know it's early, but we have gone from early conversations about a Stanley Cup run, to just begging for a win and a multiple-goal game. It's that bad. The worst part is that they are building losing habits and a losing culture now, which can be tough to shake without having to shake things up. That means a blockbuster trade. I'm not sure if they're at that level of desperation yet. But somethings got to change. They're the only team in the NHL who hasn't scored double-digit goals yet! Montreal has a paltry 9 goals on the season. Easily the worst in the NHL.
Prediction: The LA Kings at Sports Interaction
I would love to tell you that I felt good about tonight's game and that The Habs are probably going to rebound. But when a team is in a tailspin this bad, it's almost impossible to predict when they will pull themselves out of it. I have to back the Kings tonight, even though they are not exactly crushing it so far this season, offensively. But they have been astoundingly good defensively. The Kings have only given up 9 goals all season, making them the only team in the NHL not to surrender double-digit goals on the season. That doesn't bode well for Montreal.
This game could shatter a lot of trends, but I don't think it will. It's just a simple matter of you have (so far this season) the National Hockey League's best defensive team, playing at home, against the worst offensive team. That's not brain surgery. So far this season, the Kings have only lost 1 game, a home loss to the Calgary Flames, which was also the only game this season in which the Kings gave up more than 2 goals.
But let's be completely fair and try to level this playing field. It seems like every week we bring up Montreal's tough schedule to start the season. But it's a real thing. This stretch of struggle has seen a lot of road games and games against quality teams. But no excuses, they should be at least .500 right now. They ain't.
Now let's look at the Kings' schedule to start the season. To be fair, they have only had to play one road game. Most of this damage and stellar defense has come on their home ice. They did win their only road game so far, in a convincing 4-1 beating of the struggling San Jose Sharks. That being said, the Sharks just did kick the hell out of the Habs.
Let's re-examine the LA Kings in November. Because after tonight's game against Montreal, they are on the road for the rest of October. They go on a 6 game road trip, starting with Columbus on Saturday. And next week is going to be extremely rough, with 4 road games in 6 nights, starting against Toronto, then Ottawa the next night. Then off to Montreal and then Boston. Let's see how good their defensive statistics are after that grind. I doubt they will still be sitting in second place in the Western Conference.
That being said, I am getting firmly behind them tonight. And I don't know if Montreal is going to win another game until they go up against the Panthers at home on Tuesday. A win tonight would be huge. Because the bleeding needs to stop as soon as humanly possible.
