Tonight’s game between the Habs and the Rangers is a battle between two teams who just got slapped in the face. The Leafs just lit the Rangers up for 8 goals. 5 of which came in the first god damned period. Elsewhere, the Habs got lit up for 6 goals against Washington last game, 4 coming from Alexander Ovechkin’s stick. Both teams ran into freight trains that are off to strong starts. This was Ovechkin’s second hat trick in a row. Meanwhile, the Leafs are off to an explosive start to this regular season, scoring 15 goals in their first two games, leading to insufferable Leaf fans all over Canada.

Where to begin? Ok, both teams are coming off an ass-kicking. So that is going to make for a fun game to watch. A bit of wounded pride makes for intense hockey. So expect some big hits from both squads early on, and a very physical game. Ultimately, both team’s defense and goaltending took a beating last game, and they have some proving to do.

First of all. New York was late to the puck on every single play last night, and that led to Henrik Lundqvist getting unfairly shelled for 5 goals in the opening period. None were his fault. You could feel the “I’m getting too old for this Sh%$” expression from under the mask. New York did rally as best they could. They scored 5 of their own goals. But Toronto netted 3 more for the rest of the game. And there is no winning a game where you give up 8 goals. Even if you win, you lose.

Meanwhile, The Habs surrendered 6 goals to the Washington Capitals and lived through their own first-period nightmare by going to the locker room down 4-0 after a period. Ovechkin opened the scoring with a turnaround blast at the net, and things just didn’t get better. Next, they were down 2-0 less than a minute later. Then they added another, then Ovechkin ended the period with his third goal and the hats started to rain down on the ice… IN THE FIRST period! 

Braden Holtby definitely won the much-hyped battle of the goalies, really by virtue of surviving the whole game. But he also turned in a fantastic performance and stopped 38 shots on the night.

I don't like Montreal’s odds of going on the road and beating an equally mad Rangers team. Granted, they look straight up messy after a 0-2 start, particularly at the defensive end, where they have given up 12 goals in their first two games combined. I predict they will right the ship and win their first game tonight.
