Kings at Canadiens NHL Week 10
The Montreal Canadiens did more than win a single game on Tuesday night. They released a collective ‘whew’ across Canada as Habs fans saw that this team does, in fact, have the capacity to play good hockey. Because they hadn’t mustered a single win since opening night, and Tuesday night’s victory against the Panthers was actually their first home win of the season. Was this turning over a new leaf, or merely a small blip on an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory? The Habs’ season can go either way at this point.
Prediction: Montreal Canadiens at Sports Interaction
All aboard the Habs bandwagon. This is a good time to get on, before it starts to get too crowded. I do believe the Habs will turn their season around and make the playoffs. I’m not seeing a massive 9 or 10 game winning streak. But I think they will inch their way up the standings. Winning 6 or 7 games in 10 for the rest of the season. They will slowly climb back up to .500 hockey, then into the playoff picture. 2-7 is an awful start and setting themselves up for having to work very hard for the rest of the season. But it’s certainly a pit they can climb out of. And teams that win after a long losing streak will typically roll off two or three in the next four games, with a bit of newfound confidence, and I’m actually predicting the Habs will do that, starting with a win against the Kings tonight.
Here’s what the Habs did on Tuesday night: won a game, and restored a bit of faith. Here’s what they did not do: change the fact that they are still at the bottom of the NHL in a lot of crucial categories. But they did move up out of the last place in a few categories:
- Total Goals: Montreal has 17 on the season, passing Edmonton for 2nd worst
- Goals per Game: Montreal is now averaging 1.89 goals, again passing Edmonton for 2nd worst
Other areas of concern are that they are still miles and miles from where they should be. They have the league’s most talented goalie and they’re the 3rd worst defensive team in the NHL, and letting in almost 4 goals a game, averaging 3.78.
Now onto the away team, who we are extremely hesitant to bet against. LA looks great to start the season. They are currently the top team in the Western Conference and second overall, just behind Tampa Bay. They are in the middle of a 6-game road trip, to test their real first-place-worthiness. And so far, so good. They’re 2 and 1 on the road trip so far, beating the Blue Jackets, then losing in Toronto, and then winning in a shootout in Ottawa. They have tonight’s game in Montreal, then Boston, then St. Louis before returning home. This will be a real test for them.
This team has looked mad-impressive though. The Kings are averaging 3.75 goals per night, good enough for 4th in the NHL. But they’re also only giving up 2.11 goals per game, making them the best defensive team in the league right now.
Sufficed to say normally I would not pick a struggling offensive team to win over a strong defensive team. But the stars are somewhat aligned. Montreal has confidence after a 5 goal game. And LA may take them for granted, they’re in the middle of a road trip, and Montreal knows they desperately need to string some wins together. I think they will want it more and be faster to the puck tonight.
