You can call them unlucky. You can call them road weary. You can call them tired. Call them whatever you want, the bottom line is the Montreal Canadiens are losers of their last three games in a row, and are off to an absolutely dreadful start to the season. The record is not a big concern. 1-3, who cares? It's a long season. Considering how tough the schedule was to start, 2-2 would've been impressive. They're only one game off of that. The most concerning part is the complete lack of goal scoring.
Prediction: Montreal Canadiens at Sports Interaction
It seems like so long ago, we were cursing the tough schedule that Montreal had to start the season, and saying what a solid win they opened with on the road in Buffalo. For the record, we were also praising Buffalo as an improved team, and they have yet to win a game this season. But that's their plate. Not ours. The bottom line is the Canadiens haven't won a game since then, and have only scored… Two goals… Repeat. Montreal only has 2 goals in 3 games. That's very clearly not going to get it done. But I like Montréal's odds of rebounding tonight.
The entire world is jumping on the Toronto Maple Leafs bandwagon, early this season. They are off to a 3-1 start and Toronto has scored a ridiculous 22 goals in four games. Yeah. That's impressive. But let's not forget how young this team is. Of course, youth and fresh legs are this team's greatest assets, besides offensive firepower. But that same youth is going to lead to inconsistency. Especially on the road. I think that trouble on the road is going to be a problem as the season winds on. if they can break even on the road this season, that will be a testament to their Hall of Fame coach.
But let's focus on the game tonight. The game will be played in Montreal, which is good. Toronto is coming off a loss against the New Jersey Devils, at home. This was a tough loss for Toronto, as New Jersey re-exposed a lot of their weaknesses. This is not a fantastic defensive team. New Jersey lit them up for 6 goals in their own building. Which stings. Which actually means they're going to go into tonight's game pretty pissed off. But Montreal has lost three games in a row, so they're pissed off too. Oh yeah, also, these are the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montréal Canadiens playing on a Saturday night. So what I'm saying is you're going to enjoy tonight's game no matter what.
The bottom line is, despite all the statistics and early trends, this is a matchup between the league's most explosive offense in the league's best goaltender. That's enough to tune in right there. Besides all of the pomp and circumstance around Original Six matchups and rivalries. We're going to be fired up for this game no matter what and so will the players.
To add an extra amount of intensity to tonight's game, both of these teams should be pretty well rested. Montreal hasn't played since Tuesday, and haven't had to travel. Toronto had to travel, but they haven't played since Wednesday. So, there will be lots of high emotions and fresh legs out on the ice tonight. Goddamnit, I'm excited. This is going to be a fun game, and Montreal is picking up their first home win of the season.
