NFL Draft 2020: what to watch in this year's virtual draft
The NFL Draft in 2020 will be a new one: completely virtual using only telephones and the internet due to the Coronavirus pandemic. But it's business as usual as all 32 NFL teams bolster their rosters with this year's crop of college football prospects. An exciting NFL offseason ruled by trades and big-name departures could carry to this draft.
Fast facts about the 2020 NFL Draft
- The Cincinnati Bengals are picking first overall
- Joe Burrows (QB) is the consensus first overall pick
- The Miami Dolphins have the most draft picks with 14 including three first-round picks
- The New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs are tied for the fewest draft picks with five each
- This entire draft will be held virtually over the phone and internet
Let's look at the 2020 NFL Draft.
NFL Draft 2020: teams to watch
New England Patriots
Let's get obvious out of the way: Tom Brady briefly stole headlines across the sports world when he left the team to sign with Tampa Bay. For the first time in nearly two decades, the Pats are in need of a quarterback. Picking at 23rd in this year's draft, it won't be shocking to see the Pats reach for a QB or pull off a trade to snag one.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins were so bad last season they couldn't even tank properly. Hence, they're picking fifth instead of first and could miss out on the top quarterback prospects by then. Armed with ten picks in the first five rounds, including three in round one, Miami can engineer a blockbuster draft-day trade to grab a franchise quarterback.
Los Angeles Chargers
Overshadowed by the Pats losing Brady, the Chargers also lost their long-time signal-caller when Philip Rivers left for the Colts. They will be picking sixth and already have a veteran QB in Tyrod Taylor. This team is still a playoff contender and talks of them sticking with Tyrod could just be a smokescreen as they shock everyone by reaching for a quarterback.
Dallas Cowboys
It's the start of the Mike McCarthy era in Arlington bringing plenty of intrigue including what direction they'll go during Draft Day. The Cowboys inked quarterback Dak Prescott to a major deal and signed the offensive-minded McCarthy. With the 17th overall pick, the Cowboys have a bevy of playmakers at their disposal.
Players to watch in the 2020 NFL Draft
Tua Tagovailoa (QB)
Joe Burrows might be the consensus first-overall pick, but Tua is the second-best QB prospect, injuries considered. Outside Cincinnati and Miami, not many other teams in the top-15 are starving for a quarterback. There's no telling where and when Tua goes, but his fall could be a boon for both him and the team that takes a shot at him.
Michael Pittman (WR)
Most mocks don't have Michael Pittman as a first-round draft choice and many scouts don't even consider him a top-five or even top-seven receiving prospect. Yet Pittman has both the physical tools and workman attitude that can entice a team enough to reach for him over much more "talented" wideouts.
Jordan Love (QB)
The opposite of Tagovailoa is Love, who while also dealing with adversity, has seen his stock get a bump. With no consensus number-two quarterback behind Burrows, it's possible for Love, who only ranks fourth in most QB boards to leapfrog both Tagavailoa and Justin Herbert. Look for teams picking within the 5-9 range to eye Love.
How this NFL Draft impacts the 2020 NFL season
The NFL Draft has been a boon or a curse for NFL franchises. Teams like the Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay City have seen success thanks to consistently good drafting while teams like the Broncos and Browns continue to struggle thanks partly to weak drafts.
This year's NFL draft doesn't appear to have a messiah, but making a solid pick can yield a productive player and adding this up through several rounds can take a meandering team to the path of contention.
