The Texans and Raiders kick off the NFL playoffs in a matchup nobody expected when the season started. The Raiders are the surprise team of the year going 12-4, their best record since 2002 when they lost in the Superbowl. But the key piece behind this resurgence, quarterback Derek Carr, was sidelined by injury in Week 16 and even backup Matt McGloin took a hit. Rookie Connor Cook will make NFL history by being the first rookie to make his first NFL start in the playoffs. The Texans finished 9-7 for a third straight year backed by the league's best defense despite their big offseason signing, quarterback Brock Osweiler being a massive bust. The Raiders also boast a solid defense and given the questionable nature of both quarterbacks, this might be the best bad game of the playoffs and unpredictability is a given.

Whether it's a low-scoring game or not, the Texans and Raiders appear destined to play a nailbiter like they did in their Week 11 game in Mexico City. About half of both teams' games were decided by seven points or fewer. The Raiders defeated the Texans in their regular season game but it was arguably because of the poor officiating that negated several big Texans' plays including two consecutive running plays short on a first-down marker that led to a turnover on downs and a go-ahead touchdown for the Raiders. Whoever wins, it'll be a close game with or without blown calls.

Cook is a big question mark and historically, rookie quarterbacks aren't efficient especially against the Texans' menacing defense. Osweiler is a turnover machine himself but the Texans should eke out a close one here.
