UFC 253 comes packed with fireworks from both inside the octagon and the betting lines as middleweight king Israel Adesanya settles his grudge with the unbeaten destroyer, Paulo Costa. Both fighters are explosive strikers and with ill will all but guaranteeing heated exchanges. Co-headlining are red-hot fighters Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz facing off for the vacant light heavyweight title. Let's break down these fights and see which bets we can cash.
UFC 220 Expert Odds and Predictions
Boston fans will temporarily have to put down their phones and stop hitting refresh for an injury update on Tom Brady’s hand to enjoy a bit of UFC this Saturday. It’s Ok, guys. You can check between rounds. Fortunately, The TD Garden will be treated to not one, but two, title fights and a night of hard-hitting UFC action. Let’s take a look at how experts see the odds.
Daniel Cormier (-335) vs. Volkan Oezdemir (+255)
In our main event, we have a man in a very bad mood, Daniel Cormier, going up against a knockout artist with a record of 15-1.
Poor Cormier, man. Nobody works harder than this guy. But he heartbreakingly has his rivalry with Jon “Bones” Jones ended in a disappointing knockout, only to be told, “Hey man. Jones was on drugs. Here’s your belt back. Enjoy… champ.” That’s got to be like being the guy who finishes silver at the Olympics, has the gold medalist test positive, then receive the gold medal via FedEx. “Yay?”
Cormier oozes swagger, but there’s no way he feels like the champion right now. We’re seeing a very rare occurrence. A man defending his belt, even though his last fight him saw him KOed and almost cry in the ring. Hopefully, we never see that again.
Let’s take a look at the other side. Volkan Oezdemir is a bad, bad man. Since arriving in the UFC less than a year ago, he’s fought 3 times, with 3 impressive wins. He returned to the light heavyweight class in his debut and won a decision over Ovince Saint Preux. After that, he won 2 fights via knockout in a combined time that’s less than it takes to microwave an egg.
So he’s coming in hot, Y'all.
Even at the “Ripe” age of 38, I see The Champ responding and winning this fight. If he loses, he may never heal from the injuries that he will sustain after Dana White throws him under the bus.
Francis Ngannou (-175) vs. Stipe Miocic (+145)
In the heavyweight bout, we have a matchup that could hopefully ignite a bit more excitement in this under-watched and under-cared about division.
Miocic has been a wrecking machine lately, effectively putting down the last 5 opponents who have stood in his way. But he last fought in May of 2017, when he put Junior dos Santos out of our misery. Meanwhile, the Francis Ngannou hype train is chugging right along. Since landing in the UFC in 2016, he’s racked up 4 impressive wins. This includes 2 Performance of the Night honours, as well as the Knockout of the Year (2017) when he gave a Mortal-Kombat-like uppercut to Alistair Overeem.
I know this won’t be a popular outcome, but I have the champ keeping his title, and contenders going 0-2 on the night. This really does have Fight of the Night potential, which we almost never say about heavyweight bouts.
