Cardinals and Pirates Battle for MLB National League Central Pennant
Pirates vs Reds: Pittsburgh is in a must win situation
Although they have secured at least a Wild Card playoff berth, Pittsburgh has much bigger fish to fry as they continue to chase the Cardinals. September didn't start well for the Pirates as they dropped a three game series versus St. Louis to fall five games out of the NL Central race. Since then though - the Pirates have been one of the hottest team in baseball as the Buccos are on a 16-4 recent run. RHP Vance Worley (8-4 ERA 2.93) gets the call for Pittsburgh as he aims for a fourth straight win. Worley has allowed eight runs (six earned) over 24 innings pitched in his last five starts - all wins for the Pirates. Cincinnati (74-85) looks to play the spoiler roll as they close out a highly disappointing season. RHP Mike Leake (11-13 ERA 3.78) has been leaky recently as he has given up 19 runs (18 earned) over 21 innings in four September starts.
St. Louis vs Arizona: Cardinals cling to a one game NL Central lead
Back at the MLB postseason party for the eleventh time in fifteen seasons, and for a fourth straight year, St. Louis looks to get back to their winning ways when they battle Arizona tonight. The Cardinals just dropped two of three games to the lowly Cubs and they can feel the Pirates breathing down their neck. The Cards are 15-8 in September and they turn to RHP Michael Wacha (5-6 ERA 3.18) who is still trying to to find his form after spending 2.5 months on the disabled list. In his three starts since coming of the DL, Wacha has been spotty at best as he's given up nine runs (eight earned) in just 11.2 innings pitched. We expect him to pull it together here. Arizona counters with RHP Trevor Cahill (3-2 ERA 5.55) who has been dreadful all season long. Cahill has been rocked for 23 runs over 22 innings in his last five starts and he's riding a personal four game losing streak. We have to back the team with more on the line in this contest - that being the St. Louis Cardinals. MLB Betting Advice: Should they end up tied when the dust settles on Sunday afternoon, St. Louis will host Pittsburgh in a one game playoff to decide the NL Central title on Monday. For that to happen though, the Cardinals need to lose on a day when the Pirates win and the teams must match wins or loses in their other two remaining contests. We don't see either of them losing tonight so we'll tie the Bucs and Cards together with a 200 unit parlay ticket using the money line prices posted on the betting board at online sportsbooks. We will also pick the Pirates to earn a straight up win over the Reds with a 300 unit money line wager.
