New York vs Philadelphia: Rangers and Flyers Season Series Rubber Match
New York Rangers: Aim for a third straight win over the Flyers
Red hot out of the starting gate, with a 17-6-2 record during the first two months of the 2015-16 NHL season, New York hit a skid as the Rangers posted a dismal 4-7-2 mark in December. Though not without some struggles, the Blueshirts are back on track as they have posted a 10-5-2 record in the New Year that includes a 7-2-1 mark over their last ten contests. Suspect goaltending affected the December decline but that appears to be a thing of the past now as New York outscored their opponents 31-22 during their recent winning run. After winning four straight contests, the Rangers look to rebound from a 5-4 (OT) loss at home on Friday night against the Los Angeles Kings.
Philadelphia Flyers: Still battling in the highly competitive Eastern Conference playoff race
After closing the 2015 portion of their schedule with a middling 15-14-7 record, Philadelphia picked up the pace some as they opened January on a 5-1-1 roll. That hot run hasn’t continued though as the Flyers are just 4-5-2 over their last eleven contests including a 2-1 (OT) loss to the Devils in New Jersey yesterday. Philadelphia lost their top shutdown defenseman in that match as Michael Del Zotto, who leads the Flyers in ice time this season, went down with an upper-body injury. Although still in the playoff race, Philly needs to get on a roll as they are five points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins who own the final Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference postseason chase.
Philadelphia vs New York NHL Prediction: Steve Mason (13-14-7 GAA 2.65) will face Henrik Lundqvist (27-14-4, 2.32 GAA 0.923) in the goaltenders duel tonight. After receiving just five goals of support, and getting saddled with three straight losses, Mason was brilliant as he stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced during a 5-1 win over Buffalo in his last start on Thursday. Following an up and down start to the season, Lundqvist has been hot recently allowing just 21 goals while posting a 9-3-0 record over his last twelve starts. The Flyers won the first two games (3-2 SO and 3-0) of the season series but the Rangers have won the last two meetings in a shootout by a 3-2 count. Back the Blueshirts with a five-unit wager on the money line price posted at the William Hill sportsbook.
