NHL Metropolitan Division Showdown Washington Capitals vs Philadelphia Flyers
Washington Capitals: NHL elite return to action after snow days
Riding high atop the NHL standings, Washington continues to crush almost everyone in their path. The Capitals are 36-8-3 and they are the only team in the league that doesn’t have double-digit losses. With seven games in hand, Washington has a three-point lead on Chicago in the overall standings and the Caps have a 14-point cushion over the New York Rangers in the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals numbers are amazing as they have scored 155 goals while allowing 100 goals against – good for a league best +55 GF/GA differential. Washington has posted an 8-1-1 record so far in the New Year but their last two contests were postponed due to the recent snowstorm that battered the USA east coast. The Caps last action, eight days ago, was a 6-3 win over Columbus.
Philadelphia Flyers: Rollercoaster style season continues in the City of Brotherly Love
Unable to gain any sort of consistency, during the first half of the 2015-16 NHL season, Philadelphia has a 20-18-8 record and they are seventh overall in the Metropolitan Division – 25 points behind the Capitals. Though they have games in hand on the teams they are chasing, the Broad Street Boys are seven points out of the Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers are 5-4-1 over their last ten games but they have dropped three in a row - including a 3-2 loss to Boston on Tuesday night. Offense continues to be an issue as Philadelphia is second last in the league with just 105 goals scored during their first 46 games. Philadelphia is 6-2-0 during their last eight games against Washington. However, in the first of four meetings this season, the Flyers were crushed 5-2 by the Capitals at home back on November 12, 2015. We don't trust the Flyers offense in this contest.
Philadelphia vs Washing NHL Prediction: The Capitals have an advantage in the goaltending duel as Braden Holtby (30-5-2 GAA 2.01) faces Michal Neuvirth (10-6-2 GAA 2.10) tonight. Though slightly concerned that Washington may be a little rusty, following their long layoff, we are cruising with the Capitals here.
