Denver defense paves the path to a date with New England
After closing the regular season with home wins over Cincinnati (20-17 OT) and San Diego (27-20) the Broncos enter this contest well rested following a first round bye. QB Peyton Manning, for better or worse, is making his first start since Denver was crushed 29-13 at home versus Kansas City during Week 10 action. The Broncos let one get away as the Steelers posted 24 points to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat during a 34-27 win in Pittsburgh in Week 15. Duly noted that they are 1-3 during the last four contests – Denver is playing in a fifth-straight AFC Divisional contest.
Pittsburgh Steelers limp into Mile High Country battered and very road weary
Just about anything that can go against Pittsburgh has leading up to this game today. In addition to being on the road for a fourth straight match, the Steelers will be without their leading rusher and receiver as DeAngelo Williams and Antonio Brown will both sit this one out. Those two combined for 3108 of Pittsburgh’s third ranked 6327 total yards and 21 of the Steelers 41 touchdowns this season. Complicating things even more - QB Ben Roethlisberger will be playing at less than 100% as he is dealing with a shoulder injury suffered in the brawl versus the Bengals last week. How long Big Ben lasts in this game, we don't think he plays a full 60 minutes, is a concern for the Steelers.
Pittsburgh vs Denver AFC Divisional Playoff Call: The Denver defense led the NFL with 52 sacks this season. With a washed up Michael Vick waiting in the wings, as Pittsburgh’s backup QB today, Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware & Crew will be “shoulder hunting” early and often. While we aren’t sure what to expect from Peyton Manning, the Denver running game has been better recently and we expect C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman will both be factors in this contest. As we saw with Kansas City and Green Bay yesterday, plus what we are seeing from Seattle today, road warriors have fallen flat this weekend.
